ARCTIC JANUS was built in 1974, newbuilding No. 114 from Karstensen Shipyard & Machine Shop in Skagen. The hull is carvel built of oak and ice-strengthened. The superstructure is of aluminum. The ship was built for the Maritime Safety Administration as a patrol vessel and was named JANUS. It was the last wooden ship this shipyard built.
In earlier time Janus performed mainly inspektion tasks in Danish waters. The ship has also performed similar tasks in Greenland.
JANUS were in operation in Maritime Safety Administration until 1998 when it was sold and renamed ARCTIC JANUS. Under various owners the ship has been used for charter sailing and company events. The ship is registered in the DIS and is home written in Copenhagen.
The ship, with its 30.6 meters from one of the last large wooden ships, built in Denmark. It appears mainly as in 1974, with very few changes, and thus is very interesting in a culture-correlation.
